Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington in Klickitat County; south-central Washington to California.

Habitat: Dry, open places at low elevations.

Flowers: May-June

Description:
General:

Simple to freely-branched annual up to 2.5 dm. tall, with soft hairs in the inflorescence.

Leaves:

Leaves up to 3 cm. long, pinnatifid or bi-pinnatifid with narrow segments and rachis, the terminal segment elongate; bracts similar to leaves.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of dense, leafy-bracteate, terminal heads; calyx lobes 5, very strongly unequal, the larger ones spiny-cleft; corolla white to pale bluish or lavender, 8-11 mm. long, the 5 lobes 2-2.5 mm. long and longer than wide, each lobe with 3 veins; stigmas 3; ovary 3-celled, superior.

Fruits:

Capsule 3-celled, with 1-2 seeds per cell.
